Serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
“Paul urges us to display the fruit of the Spirit in our lives – to ‘serve one another humbly in love’ and to demonstrate ‘kindness’ and ‘goodness’ (VV13,22). When we lean on the Spirit to help us not act on our natural instincts, we’re better able to love those around us.” Kirsten Holmberg
Such a simple devotion and yet, we have such difficultly in following it. And the truth is, its not a wonder. We’re programmed at some level to look after ourselves! If it’s not a divine call, it’s definitely a call from cultural.
- You deserve to be happy!
- You gotta look after number one!
- If you don’t care for yourself, no one else will.
These are all examples of what cultural calls for us to pursue. It calls us to serve me, myself and I. Anything to the contrary many would understand as foolishness. Yet, Christ calls us to lay aside our right to be happy, to serve, to be completely fulfilled from our own hand and from our own desires. Christ calls us to give up our lives for others, as He gave up his life for us.
The Christ follower doesn’t serve others because they think it will secure a spot for them in heaven. No, the Christ follower knows his spot is secure in heaven because of what Jesus has already done for him. He knows Jesus Christ lived a perfect life, laid it aside to go to the cross, to be betrayed, abandoned, denied, beaten and ultimately killed so we would be saved from that death and that wrath of God. Jesus died, taking our place so we wouldn’t have to be held by death, but have life and life to the full and life everlasting!
The Christ follower has everything he/she needs. They do not need to seek after happiness. They do not need to serve number one (themselves) or care for themselves because Christ has ultimately done that for them. Now the Christ follower is free from the bonds that hold us. His time is freed to look to other things. He doesn’t need to find success. She doesn’t need to find belonging. Those things have been provided for them through the blood of Christ!
So what should the Christ follower now do with all this free time, energy and focus if they do not need to seek after their own fulfillment? Well, they should serve Jesus and ultimately fulfill that through the service of others! Let us serve others because of how Christ has served us!
Prayer of the day: “Dear God, my natural desire is to look out for myself. Help me to serve others out of love for You.”
