We sat down with Pastor Will to ask him a few questions. Get to know him a bit better by reading his responses below.
- Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in British Columbia. I grew up in a small town called Tsawwassen and also spent some time in South Surrey. My father worked for Intel in sales and my mother was a stay at home mom until my father passed away when she re-entered the workforce in the financial sector. I have two older sisters and a younger brother.
- What types of jobs have you had?
I’ve had lots of different jobs! Everything from janitor to head women’s basketball coach at a college! Thinking back on some of my favorite experiences, it would include my first job, working as an event set up and take down grunt and my two summers as a tree planter. I’ve also worked with a start-up company in Moose Jaw and a few years as a delivery driver. Some were awesome jobs and some were a bit more difficult but I’m grateful for the diverse learning I’ve had with all of them and all the people who poured into me as an employee over the years!
- What schooling/degrees do you have?
I have a BA in Theological Studies with a minor in Biblical Studies from Briercrest College and a MA in Leadership and Management from Briercrest Seminary. I’m a life-long learner and an audio-book and podcast fanatic! With the technology these days if you drive for a living you can turn your car into your own personal university!
- When/Why/How did you begin working with the church? Why are you so passionate about the church?
My first experience preaching goes all the way back to high school when I was given the opportunity to preach to my peers at youth group. My first message went as well as expected (not very good for a guy who has a speech impediment and only uses 24 letters of the alphabet well) but have come to find out that God doesn’t mind using a guy with flaws. I felt the call to head out to the middle of nowhere and attend Bible College but I only stepped into a ministry path 5 years ago with a small church plant called the Compass Church in Regina, SK.
Wide-eyed and bushy-tailed I was excited when Lead Pastor Blair Allen asked me to take part in an internship, partnering with C2C (a church planting network) to discern if church planting was the path forward! After the internship, my wife Courtney and I attended C2C Assessment where God’s call on our life to enter ministry was made clear to us in powerful ways! I’ll always be grateful to those leaders who affirmed God working in us. After that, we helped Compass plant their third church plant in the city of Regina and shortly after, we felt the call to pastor Parkland Community Church here in Yorkton SK in November 2018. We’ve been here ever since!
I’m passionate about the church because it truly is the hands and feet of Jesus that brings the hope of the world, the gospel of Jesus! I heard the gospel for the first time clearly through teachers, not ministers. It was regular men and women who explained the gospel to me and helped me come to know Jesus died for me and I accepted Jesus as my lord and savior. I want to see the church, everyday men and women, equipped for the work of ministry so people just like me can hear the gospel clearly for the first time!
- How do you feel about Parkland Community Church and the congregation?
Having only been here a couple months, the ease and comfort we feel with those in this congregation is amazing. We have people who have been here for thirty years and we have people who have been here shorter than we have! Every single one of them has been welcoming, friendly and a blast to be around! It is starting to feel a lot like home!
Parkland Community Church has this beautiful family history. Families have grown up in this church and have produced second and now even third generation Christians who stand firm in their faith, loving Jesus and serving others! What better legacy could you want for a church? Hearing from those in the church, we are excited to see that passion and that legacy be passed into the community and people who have yet to hear the good news of Jesus Christ!
- What are some of your goals, plans and visions for Parkland Community Church?
We have one mission at Parkland Community Church. That is to develop people who love Jesus and serve others for Kingdom Growth!
We want to see people come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ and how much Jesus truly cares for them! As we come to understand the depth of the gospel that saves us, it transforms us in ways we could never imagine. It grows in us and produces a life transformation that begins to reshape and enhance the lives of those we are in contact with! It is a fountain of life that overflows from person to person. We want to see that gospel growth in every single person in our congregation and also in those they share connection with! We have this amazing God we want you to know about and if you want a friendly place where you can come and hear about Him, PCC is the place for you.
The vision for Parkland Community Church is to be a church on mission. The church has a big heart for their community, friends, coworkers, loved ones and family and we want to see others come to know Jesus and build a community together that cares for one another, spurs each other on and learns from each other. We want to be a community that impacts the greater community! We want to be a blessing to you and we want to serve you and develop you and help you know Jesus. We want you to grow in faith and in hope and in love.
For Growth and Gospel!
